While Donnie's interest is based on first-hand experience parenting her own son who is affected by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Autism, her outreach extends to the international level in the field of developmental disabilities.From 2005 to 2009 Donnie worked diligently to develop and establish NOFAS Georgia, the first state affiliate of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS). While Donnie is no longer the acting Executive Director of NOFAS Georgia she remains involved with NOFAS on many levels.In 2008, Donnie's son, Iyal, obtained the first certified FASD Assistance Dog in North America. Since then, she presents to international experts on the profound benefits of… providing service dogs for children with FASDs and other "invisible disabilities".Donnie has been a unique presence in Atlanta's communications arena for over 28 years, as a speaker, producer, creative director, and writer. In the early years of multi-media, she produced award-winning educational titles for the Discovery Channel, The Smithsonian Institute and directed and produced CD-ROMs for Random House/Broderbund's Living Books series.She works on contract with Georgia State University's Center for Leadership in Disability while she promotes her 11-year old daughter's award-winning book, "My Invisible World - life with my brother, his disability and his service dog".Currently Donnie serves on the Committee for Developmental Disabilities at Jewish Family and Career Services in Atlanta and as a Board of Directors' member of All About Developmental Disabilities, a 52 year-old non-profit in Atlanta. She is serving an appointed a 3-year term with the State Advisory Panel on Special Education for Georgia.Donnie's writing about FASDs has been published in Adoption Today magazine, the International Journal on Child and Adolescent Health, and Living with FASD a publication for the FASD Support Network of Saskatchewan, Inc. She is writing two more books about Iyal's service dog, Chancer; "Nuzzle - love between a boy and his service dog" a picture story book written for early readers told from Chancer's perspective. And "Wounded in the Womb - a story of adoption, disability and the hope we found on four paws" will be published for adults sharing her family's journey from adoption to the present.Donnie seeks to find innovative ways in which to advocate for all who are touched by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
